He's saying the human race died out perhaps millions of years ago and he is a being dreaming of a past life when he was human all he can do now is recall a past that is dead and gone like in a frank herbert book.

The song writer, remembers his ex love and wants to reunite, my improving himself.

"Moving Forward using all my breath, making love to you was never second best."

His memory is of the best moment in his life, magical.

    "
I saw the world rushing all around your face, never really knowing it was always mesh and lace"

He fears the world my end because of nuclear war before he completes his mission, to return to that time. But he wants to be optimistic.
"We should know better, dream of better life's, kinds that never hate, dropped in a state of imaginary grace. I made pilgrimage to save this humans race, never understanding the race had long gone by.

He would stop the world, to be with her. Melting together from a nuclear bomb if that's what it takes.

    Best song ever
