Modest Mouse: Parting of the Sensory Meaning
Parting of the Sensory Lyrics
I would grab my shoes and then away I'd walk
Through all the stubborn beauty I start at the dawn
Until the sun had fully stopped
Never walking away from
Just a way to pull apart
Dehydrate back...
-
The lyrics contrast the dual reality of our lives: the cold, scientific reality of existence versus our need to believe that we are more, that we have a purpose, and that there's someone looking out for us, whether it's a god or a government. It's about the disappointment and anger felt when we realize we've been deceived.
I think the lyrics are a frustrated response to the senseless rules we have to follow, the corruption among those who have power over us, the needless suffering, all of the lies and propaganda, mechanisms of social order, religion used to pacify people, etc. We have to follow rules that we didn't choose. Hence the lyrics, "Who the hell made you the boss...If you were the ship then who would ever get on"
When Isaac sings, "Some day you will die and somehow something’s going to steal your carbon" it's a reference to the scientific fact that organisms (even us humans) are composed mostly of the element carbon. When we die, our cells break down back to the basic elements (mostly carbon) and go back into the Earth ("A lifelong walk to the same exact spot"). "Parting of the sensory" is a reference to our senses (sight, sound, touch, etc) shutting down when we die and having to "part" with them. -
This song has a lot to do with the theory that an afterlife is non-existent. We come from the earth and to it we must return. It also crizises God's ability to rule and the world of pain he created. "this fits like clothes made out of wasps" "Any shit that could ever walk, could take the ship and do a much finer job". Also that man must cease to exsit and our life that is ran by sensation will cease to exist as our senses peal away
