Modest Mouse: Dramamine Meaning
Dramamine Lyrics
Feeling spaced breathing out Listerine
I'd said what I'd said that I'd tell ya
And that you'd killed the better part of me
If you could just milk it for everything
I've said what I'd said and you know...
-
Dramamine is motion sickness medicine used to treat nausea occuring by your equilibrium not lining up with what you see as foundationary perspective.
To compare it to LSD is incorrect. LSD makes you hallucinate, but it most cases you are aware of it indeed being a hallucination. Dramamine vasoconstricts the major arteries going to the brain similar to more whats called deadly nightshade or datura, which was once used quite often by witches and warlocks to go in their trances. People under the influence of Dramamine (and its 'sister' drugs benadryl and zzquil) report problems in speaking and relating. This is mostly cause keeping your train of thought connected is very difficult. Oftentime users take a lot of time to say something, and strain to communicate it,but their often met with "what?". Its frusterating to say the least."I said what I said and you know what I mean. I just cant focus on anything". Visual distortions are common, oftentimes seeing someones face assomeone else or melting or wilting inward. "I see your face like youre killed in a dream".
This is coupled with a strained and sour relationship it seems. "You killed the better part of me. If you could just milk it for everything". Theres also a bit that at the end that observes the futility in cough in your sleeve to not spread germs with a person you will kiss and share germs with anyway, probably a commentary on how a bad relationship can feel like an illness.
Oftentimes when performed live Isaac sings more lyrics lifted from a newer song of his called "life like weeds". It revisits the bad relationship theme and it reinterates the others' manipulation of the situation. "And you think you figured out everything, but everyone knows that our hearts were made out of strings to be pulled". -
This song is about the effects of the medication Dramamine, which has been compared with LSD in effects on the mind.
