Opeth: Hope Leaves Meaning
Hope Leaves Lyrics
There hangs a lonely photograph
There is no reason
I'd never notice a memory that could hold me back
There is a wound that's always bleeding
There is a road I'm always walking
And I know you'll never return to this...
-
the song talks about our hopes crashing and burning. the reference here is to the person who leaves and who we hope comes back even though we know such hope is futile.
right from the start the singer says he notices those memories which hold him back. this is hope, memories of the person who is not around anymore only the hope that they will be.
hope is the wound that bleeds incessantly, the road he walks always. and in his heart he knows the person he hopes for is never coming back.
but he likes hope, it helps him go on when he loses everything else. its not the losing that bothers because he enjoys the struggle of holding on.
he stopped talking and let the silence take over for he knows how things will come apart
and they do, they burn long and deep turning his dreams to ashes and his hope to dust. he knows the truth, he knows why all this has happened but the smoke hides his regret like always and so the darkness within him deepens further.
he always knew no one was coming back but he loves the touch of a memory, and the hope it brings... -
The song is about the important person in our life who's dead. This death has left us completely grieving. It's just like a wound which bleeds and never heels.....or may it is more than that.
Also it says to the dead person that you went without talking...now that we are silent and there is no such hard feelings against you because you have done so much for us and now its time to rest so we are not thinking that you are dead.
There was a situation where we lost complete ambition of doing something....and were struggling what's left ..ie what's left here means the photo of dead person living life with the help of the dead person's photo, thinking that he's here with us, but still there is a smoke that blinds us and make us remember that the person is dead. Or as per lyrics force us to believe the dark truth of the death of our family member..who was really important for us in our lives. Here according to me I interpret the dead person as my grandma.
