Passion Pit: Eyes as Candles Meaning
Eyes as Candles Lyrics
spits out our voices singing,
"Sha la la, oh, no no,"
to kingdom come so slightly.
Here in the void in your place,
I twitch and tweak an illusion
to sit and stare so blankly
until our hope is used...

"Eyes As Candles" is one of my favorite songs, not only because of the soft beat but because of the lyrics. I always wondered what the lyrics meant and imagined his lyrics spoke of a lost lover. But until I read some biographies of some bands that would be playing at a local park in the city this spring, I stumbled across an interesting piece in Passion Pit's that made me think of this song immediately, indicating what I believe to be the inspiration of the song. In the biography it specifically writes, "In the hospital, Michael is not allowed to talk about work. “Up there, onstage, you’re alone, darling, ” a nurse tells him. “And if your life evolves into ruin, everyone will watch what you’re doing.” Michael thinks these would make good lyrics. His friends smuggle in positive reviews of Manners. When one magazine blesses the record with an 8 out of ten, he almost cries again". In "Eyes As Candles" lyrics, there are pieces of what the nurse tells Michael like in verse two, "Some unguarded room/ a smoky figure fills me full,/ makes my head swell and ruin./ The family kneels at the pew,/ They nod - 'We believe in what you're doing'". Therefore, it must have been based off of his time in the hospital, and why he was in the hospital is still a mystery to me but if anyone knows feel free to submit your interpretation as well.
