Phantogram: Black Out Days Meaning
Song Released: 2013
Black Out Days Lyrics
A thousand voices howling in my head.
Speak in tongues.
I don't even recognize your face.
Mirror on the wall.
Tell me all the ways to stay away, away, away.
And stay away, away, away...
-
My interpretation of this song is when you notice that someone you love is changing and they want you to stay away as the lyrics said.' I'm hearing voices all the time' as this line said that the person going through all this hears voices in their minds which haunts their mind .
-
My interpretation :
The song resembles change. They change so much that they don't even recognize themselves and it's making them go crazy.
"I'm hearing voices all the time and they're not mine.." Due to everyone disliking they're change; they're mind starts to overthink as the voices tell them to change and that everyone hates her.
"I don't recognize you.. anymore" -
My interpretation is that this song embodies the longing for love and romance, but hiding away. This song is what the Phantom of the Opera feels every day of his life. And look at the band name.

My interpretation of this song is something that relates to a personal experience of mine. It's the feeling of missing someone and wanting to be with them when you know how extremely damaging they are and how badly they affect you. It's knowing you're digging yourself into a hole, KNOWING they're a bad person but you're so unbelievably attached to them it's extremely difficult to live without them. They've manipulated and gaslighted you into thinking you NEED them. You feel like you're going crazy because your life is already falling apart and you can't find ways to stay away for them for the sake of your own health, hence the lyrics "Tell me all the ways to stay away" and at the start of your relationship (platonic OR romantic) they were the kindest person in your sad little world but as time crumbled away, so did their mask, so did their kindness. Hence, the lyrics "I don't even recognize your face." or "I don't recognize you anymore." It's the feeling of wanting to go back in time just to feel their arms wrap around you into a warm embrace, not their fist hitting your stomach as they proceed to gaslight you into thinking what you have to go through is "normal" or "not that bad". That's how i interperate this song.

I Interpret it as feeling like you dont know someone you've known for a while, like their changing and slipping away. It feels like they want to you to stay away, and their tired of you and all you are, hence the lyrics "Tell me all the ways to stay away". At some point, it drives you crazy and you want them to stay away from you, feeling unwanted. At the end of the song the lyrics, "Black out days, I don't even recognize you anymore" shows that you just don't know the person and they're just another face you see, one you dont recognize because they've changed who they are.
