   OK, this song is based on a cartoon from Winnie the Pooh. The guys are standing around in a grassy field on a beautiful summers day, when Tigger announces "my fingers smell like pussy". Then Eyeore sniffs his and says "well mine smell like ass". Piglet smiles and says his smell like pork. And finally Pooh looks right at the camera and says "mine smell like hunny", and the others all bust a gut laughing. Though the spelling is different, this is where REM got the phrase.

   The song is about someone who acts like "their shit don't stink".
   
   The singer both sees the arrogance ("Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper") and the confidence ("Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper") in this approach to life and how they are two sides of the same coin. ("Track a trail of honey through it all")
   
   Overall, the song is a sincere non-apology to all their fans and critics on their final album.

   when he speaks of his smelling like honey, he does not mean honey the sweet sticky substance, but rather "honey", his lover. So he is saying his balls smell like his lover, who was probably fondling them prior to the time this song was written and performed.

   There is an expression he thinks his shit doesn't stink. Or he thinks his shits don't stink. So it's possible that is the singer's response to that phrase when someone accuses him. They might say to him "you think your shits don't stink. " And his response can be "you're right - mine smell like honey."

   regardless of the inconvenient truth

   try to cover it over / your denials
   
   The end of the world (as we know it) is coming, the final fall of man
   Nature (flowers) will overcome - if it does - it will be after we're gone and what will be left will be the remnants of our roads and cities (pavement)

   As to the interpretations referring to the anus, I suspect even Michael Stipe only has one, which would make it a poor match with the plural form of the verb "smell." So, what might he have more than one of that smell like honey, uh?
   
   Other than that, just incredible kudos to that particular anonymous who made up "wrecklace." While I normally eschew creating new words, this one is a gem, combining reckless (presumably the initial intent), with wreck and necklace. Really brings to mind Tom Waits' wonderful "she's like a wrecking ball that's no longer connected to the chain."

   I think he talks about sexual orientation. He refers to heterosexual sex-making by "digging a hole" and "climbing a mountain". It may be about a gay man talking to a woman, who's flirting with this man's bi-boyfriend and "praising her fruit" :D. He doesn't even bother to argue with that woman (ı would dare you but I don't need to), he knows that at the end what she would get at most is his leftovers. He might also think his boyfriend would choose him, because -yes, his butthole smells like honey :)

    In the lines above I think he's talking about someone that doesn't listen to anyone because they think they are always right and everyone else is wrong. They think they are better than everyone else and that's why they are singing mine smell like honey

    Track a trail of honey through it all
    
    Another reason i think this is what he's referring to because in these lines he is saying how they have to go above and beyond everyone else like digging a hole deeper and climbing a mountain steeper.

    although I Really do like the first two interpretations here is my take:
    
    He is pretty certain she is going to give their cover away (secret that would have been burried and taken to the grave, but she is being wrecklace) Or he is jealous and afraid he will loose her because of her conceitedness and always trying to attract other more adequate guys;bear (honey trail).
