Righteous Brothers: Unchained Melody Meaning
Song Released: 1965
Unchained Melody Lyrics
I've hungered for your touch a long.. lonely time
Time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much
Are you still mine?
I need your love
I need your love
God speed your love to me
Lonely rivers flow to the sea.....

#1 top rated interpretation:To me, according to my interpretation, Unchained Melody is a melodic composition of everlasting love. A type of love so strong; one that connects two souls, so deeply in tune, with the spirit of each other. The type of love that may not be clearly understood, but is felt on an inarticulate and purely spiritual level. A higher level of love much greater than many can recognize, identify, or make reason of. A type of connection that unites the past, present, and future.
Those of you that are enlightened through experience or intuition and have developed the ability to acquire perspective while grasping the concept of the relationship between what the past, present, and future share are those who can truly value the strong meaning and can comprehend the balance between the symbolic lyrics and powerful melody.
Perhaps, to some, it may represent a love that is seemingly lost, but not forgotten and remains unconditionally unchanged.
Others may relate to a present situation that a life obstacle has created physical and/or emotional distance for unknown reasons while maintaining hope for what the heart desires.
The future driven folks may associate the strong lyrical expressions to a love that has not yet occurred, but their awareness remains awake of their souls counterpart, while waiting patiently for their arrival.
There are so many ways to analyze the true meaning of the song, but one constant exists: perspective and awareness of the greater picture...LOVE.
Much love to all who have read my interpretation and can appreciate how the sentiment of this meaningful and special art form is❤️
Ps--- I always knew my love was out there...and when he found me...this song played in my head when he first kissed me. It was in that moment, my past, present and future aligned and I knew we were finally united☺️ -
This was my wedding song to by beloved soul mate that I married in 1991. Every time we heard this song throughout our marriage we got up and danced to it no matter where we were. He passed away last September and I believe I will see him again some day. In the meantime, I will not ever dance to that song until such time we can meet again and dance throughout eternity.

I just played this song to the love of my life Becky. She is a music enthusiast who gets so easily emotional listening to lovely song.
We both live in a different state far away from each other and hope to see this weekend.
Thanks to all those who have given the background to this beautiful song.
I am waiting for her and will kiss her when I finally see her. -
Pure love. Nothing but love. If I met the right person this would be my wedding song.

A correction on the previous correction. Our city ran the camp. Non resident day visitors had to exit the camp/dance premises by 10 o'clock pm - which is when the Moody Blues song "Go Now" was played. Those people actually camping in one of the 3 "Villages" were allowed to stay and continue dancing. I was right the first time - the Righteous Brothers song, "Unchained Melody" was always the very last song of the evening played at the teen dance. I remember hoping to be asked to dance to that last song - never happened ☹️. Still, one of my all time favorite songs - if not THE favorite. After 45 plus years, so many wonderful memories (not just the obvious romantic ones) are conjured up whenever I hear it- swimming at the beach, ice cream at the canteen, walking home at nite from the dance with brothers, sisters and friends and seeing my first shooting star, the smell of the pine drifting through the trees, listening to the rain hitting the metal roof of our camper trailer, sitting around the campfire, telling stories, making new friends, outdoor movies, night time sing alongs on the "steamboat" ride on one of the lakes, paddle boats, the list goes on and on!!

Correction to earlier post - the song played at the end of every teen dance at that MI camp was "Go Now" by the Miody Blues. But "Unchained Melody" was played nightly - toward the end if the dance.

From what I have read/researched this is a song about a man in prison who is longing for his lover and hoping she is still in love and waiting for him. But I do think the feelings and emotions evoked can be applicable to many situations and relationships. This was the song I grew up hearing every night of the summer at a family camp in MI. Every night, all summer long, and it never, ever got old. Such a romantic song, the best one to slow dance to. Sad and haunting at the same time. I never knew the meaning, but as an adult I reflected on the Righteous Brothers release date(1965?) and it made me think of how much it must have meant to those with loved during the Vietnam War- although it was written in the 1950's for a prison movie. I have always appreciated how this song had layers of meaning and how it can mean so many things to different people, and is relatable in many levels. Probably my favorite song of all time.

This was my song when my husband was in Viet Nam. The words completely fit what was going on. We were married 6 months when he left and we will soon celebrate our 50th year anniversary. My favorite song.
