Satellite Lyrics

[Verse 1]
You can't feel the heat, until you hold your hand over the flame
You have to cross the line just to remember where it lays
You won't know your worth now son until you take a hit
And you won't find the beat until you lose yourself in...

when they say: "i'm passing over you like a satellite", i think to my history lessons. I have learned that durring the cold war the Country's of eastern-Europe 'flew around' the sovjet republic like satellites. So i think it means that the people 'fly around the government like a satellite' and that the people are obliged to listen, so when they fall, in poverty for example, the social system can save them.
but i think the word 'satellite' has a second meanig: the people are controlled an followed by the coverment, just like a satellite can follow them. that's why 'we can't run and hide'

in the lyrics the spelling for america is actually amerika like in collapse (post amerika) becasue it is intending to portray the country as fascist and oppressive and culturally inferior.

I think this song is not only about americans, but about everyone who is having a hard time in their lives. It's about someone who wants to give up, but someone else (bf/gf) tells them not to give up, that he/she'll be with her/him like a satellite and will help her/him get through their problem. I personally like to think of this song like someone wanting to kill himself/herself and their bf/ gf trying to tell him/her not to do it

The song is a solid resemblence of what made punk/anti-authority such a solid movement for 20+ years. It is a straight up screw the man and if we all stick together we can show the big bad government whose boss. Maybe it has a slight reference to the current state of the economy and the orphans of the american dream could stand for the kids whose parents have lost it all due to lack of employment or suicidal parents who couldn't face feeling like a failure. She can't face the world because this was the fate of her parents so he offered to disappear with her because the same happened to him and they are fostered children. Any way you shake it almost all of RA's music is anti something and that is beconing harder and harder to find these days. There is a reason that Bad Religion has been touring with RA promoting the hell out of them and it ain't because they need or want the cash a tour brings. It is simply because there is a consistent message of FUCK YOU!

A boy and girl in love. No one believes they'll make it. They're sick of everybody telling them what to do and sneak out while "they" sleep. They have the rest of their lives to be together.

This song is saying that the "american dream" lived by prior generations has ruined our nation and that America is coming to an end so the youth's best shot is to get out of this country instead of dealing with prior generations problems.

A satellite is something that orbits something else (like the planets are satellites of the sun and the moon is a satellite of the earth) so I think it means that no matter where the girl goes he'll follow her.
And that could fit with the 'running away' thing the person above was talking about.

I personaly think its about two people running away. Its just that the bridge: "she told me that she never
could face the world again" sounds like a reason for somone to run away.
"we'll sneak out while they sleep", generaly when kids run away its a night so people wont see them leave. "we'll come clean and start over the rest of our lives" means they'll forget all the bad things that happened to them and the things they've done and start a new life.
"when were gone we'll stay gone, out of sight out of mind" they wont come back and hope that people will just forget them.
"it's not too late we have the rest of our lives" saying that its never to late to have another go at life.
"Orphans of the amercain dream":(I'm not American so forgive me if I'm wrong) but isn't the american dream somthing about being free and everyone treated equaly and better opertunties, orphans are children that parents have died and lost them or died before they were born and never realy had any in the first place, so "Orphans of the amercain dream" will be people who never a chance to free and have big opertunities and be treated eaqualy or were and something changed so they weren't.
But that's just what i think.

It could be about the moon because afterall it is earths satellite and it could be watching over us because it passes over us everyday. And it could be a little nightlight in the bridge of the song for the people about to sail off in the night and escape to begin the rest of their lives.

The easiest thing to do if you're fleeing the American police state of rock/metal yore is to cross the border into Canada. Typically, this does not involve sailing. Hence, I think it's talking about the boat people - orphans of the American Dream because America cut Vietnam out of the budget, risking everything to take the plunge, and generally captured and subsequently ground under the heel of Vietnamese Communists, much like a Soviet satellite state.

As I listen to the song, I assume it's about today's generation struggling to live a good life in the future because they won't have the same treatment like the elderly will. The "Satellite" is the elderly being held up by younger citizens also known as "The American Dreams." Because the Younger generation believe that they can't live a better life from where they are now, for example in America due to the economy they plan to leave the country and live a new life.

It's all about keeping the American dream, our generation is doing their best to make the world a better place.

I would say it is a love song/what is wrong in the world song. tim puts hints of love in the song, but there is points in the song were it is not love. so i would say it is fifty-fifty on love and what is wrong in the world.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

This may be wrong, but i completely agree with the guy talking about Reagan. Ever since he left us, this country has lost it's ways. I think that this song is also about how our current government is corrupting society by trying manipulate us into the so-called "perfect" society. They are trying to controll our population, make us all skinny, make us buy sweatshop products, and drain our bank accounts with these outrageous gas prices.
"You have to cross the line just to remember where it lays". That is my absolute favorite part of this song, because it's acts as a double-view. It could stand for society telling the government that it has gone too far with its idiocity, or it could stand for how us as Americans have to stand strong with what we have, and not to respond violently to this anarchy that the government is throwing at us.
This is just my opinion, and i respect all of the others on this page.
P.S. Rise Against is the band that keeps me alive everyday.
