Robbie Robertson - Tears of Rage Meaning

Tears of Rage Lyrics
And now you'd throw us all aside and put us all away
Oh, what dear daughter 'neath the sun could treat a father so?
To wait upon him hand and foot and always tell him "No"
(Chorus:)
Tears...

This is NOT a Robbie Robertson song. It was written by Bob Dylan and Richard Manuel.

I've always wondered if this song, which is written in the form of a parent talking to a child, might be an allegory for the founders of a nation talking to its citizens about betraying the principles that the nation was founded on. The references to independence day, scratching the childs name in sand and pointing the way to go make me think this might be a reasonable interpretation. On the other hand, I am really just speculating. Maybe it is simply a parent disappointed that a child has gone astray.
