Robbie Williams: Angels Meaning

Album cover for Angels album cover

Song Released: 1997

Angels Lyrics

I sit and wait
Does an angel contemplate my fate
And do they know
The places where we go
When we´re grey and old
'Cos I´ve been told
That salvation lets their wings unfold
So when I¡¯m lying in my bed
Thoughts running through my...

This song was written by an Irishman, Ray Hefferman,

He wrote the song in a Dublin hospital after his daughter died at birth.

There has been some confusion about who wrote the song as Mr Hefferman is not credited in any way as he sold the song to Robbie Williams management company shortly after writing it.

In the original version he wrote 'I'm loving an angel instead' rather than the Robbie Williams version of I'm loving angels instead'

The song lyrics describe how this person is being watched over by an angel, i.e. his daughter and whatever he does in life he knows that she will guide him and forgive him.

He also feels reassured that whether he is right or wrong her love for him, and his for her will always be strong.

It is a little known fact that despite being a worldwide hit, and also one of Robbie Williams's most famous songs, Ray Hefferman only received F7500 as he signed a waiver when selling the song.

This song (I believe) is about how he loves and has fallen in love with an angel, because he knows she won't hurt him as others would. That's why she "brings flesh to his bones". She is giving him a new lease of life he has never felt before. That's my thought anyway

Well, Im not sure if Robbie Williams is religeous but anyway...

I've always thought that he is saying that God is forgiving and good, as christians generally beleive "Ive been told, that savaltion, lets the wings unfold" and that although he has sinned he has been granted redemption in the form of a girl he loves (as an angel of god) "and she offers me protection, a lot of love and affection" but instead of thanking, loving and worshiping god for her, he is too busy loving her instead, thus sinning more.

I believe that life was taking its toll on Robbie and he was having suicidal thoughts. His last resort he felt a connection with angels and wanted the world to know where his mind was. He was ready to be taken as crossing over he wouldn’t be judged, would have unconditional love. Life has been a water fall and when he comes to call - as in passes he can rely on Angels more than he could humans This song was a cry for help

This song is about new hope....the angel give him a gift he needs and that makes him love the angel for giving him a new hope, a new life and he knows that whatever angel give to him means the ones makes him complete...

I'm loving angels instead could be seen as a middle finger to the evil establishment that is Hollywood.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

This song is purely about getting old and not finding love and being alone. The only option then in this ageist world is to go to places where you can find love and affection which is full of angels, who dont care whether your right or wrong. Full stop.

The song is about Peter Stringfellow's City of Angels, a lap dancing club that Robbie has made no secret of having been a frequent patron. He references it again in the lyrics to "Dig Your Polished Nails Into The Dirt"

    "St. Peter's gonna be unfaithful
Tell God he's got a dirty angel"

    Re read the lyrics again. worth noting;

"I sit and wait" as you do in the lap dancing club
    "do they know
    The places where we go
When we're grey and old" plenty of dirty old men in the club

"So when I'm lying in my bed
    Thoughts running through my head
And I feel the love is dead
    I'm loving angels instead"

LOVE is DEAD so I'm loving Angels INSTEAD
He's slept with lots of strippers, sometimes paying for the privilige

"And through it all she offers me protection
A lot of love and affection
    Whether I'm right or wrong"

    because he's paying her

    "And as the feeling grows
She breathes flesh to my bones"

    Do you need a picture?

St Martins Lane, on which Angels is situated is a one way lane.
"And my pain walks down a one way street"

Robbie wrote this song about the golden Angel on the top of the town hall in Burslem, Staffordshire where Robbie grew up. It was also for his mum but he is talking about how the angel helps him through things and gives him strength and courage whenever he needs it.

I can only give my own opinion. We had this as our first wedding dance because I felt it was about unconditional love, in life and death. The deepest love you can give one person.

I think this song is for and about his mum.
It seems to me that she was always there for him, but has done many mistakes.
But what ever she did he want never give up his life.
    I Love this song <3

I think this is a reliqious song too, but i think angels represent God here. He says that even their can be no prove of God existence he believes in God 'whether I’m right or wrong', because it gives him a kind of confidence and guidelines in live; 'and I know ill always be blessed with love', 'she offers me protection a lot of love and affection'. Being religious just helps him with living.
