Say Anything: Less Cute Meaning
Less Cute Lyrics
-
Basically the song is from the point of view of a girl, who's in love with a boy. The boy doesn't return her feeling but he sleeps with her all the time. So the girls tries to make him jealous by dating another guy who she has no feelings for but who is a 'less cute' version of the guy she really loves...
Never thought that I could feel
such a slap in the face
[He rejected her]
Since my semester in New York
where I drank it away
[probably where she met him]
Social strategies are taught
to bohemian crowds
[I honestly have no Idea what that's supposed to mean...]
And my love was like a food stamp
handing it out, oh
[he doesn't care for her or her feelings at all]
Though I fell in love with you,
all fey and grizzled and mature
You left me naked, pining,
whining on you bathroom floor
[They had sex but he pretty much dumped her then]
If it makes you jealous tell us
just which boy we should adore
And we talk about myself
so I don't mind that he's a bore
[So she dates this other guy; she finds him boring but hopes that seing then togethr will make the boy she loves jealous]
He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do
[Self-explanatory?]
Mountain man, brag about your band to me
You got me hot with all those snide
remarks about my poetry
But he gobbles up every single line about stars
And how they scar my slightly chubby arms
like brightly light cigars
[Appearantly the less cute guy she dates is going on her nerves, but she's to proud to admit he's not what she wants.]
So now, he's next to me
[He's with her]
And I can feel you in my heart
[But the other boy's who she really wants]
You're everything
You're everything he'll never be
It's misery, and more specifically
I miss that day you spit on me
[And she would bare with every kind of humiliation to be with him?]
He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do
He's like a less cute version of you
But he'll have to do
He's like a Wal-Mart version of you
But he'll have to do
He'll have to do
He has no inkling of your status or mind
[He's not even half as good as the original/ the boy she really loves]
He's just the glow that I splatter to bind
[Metaphorically, he's the burner to cauterizate her open would]
You and I like Siamese twins
So let the sick sad game begin
[He's still connected to her, in some way and inseparably, so she'll ]
Now, you're here again
[She still has sex with the boy she wants]
And he will wonder where I've been
[And cheats on her boyfriend]
I'm giving in
But in my own opinion
That's how to be
[But that's okay with her.]
Though I can hear him singing
"all this envy's killing me"
[Although she's breaking the less cute guy's heart.]
