She just had an abortion
She was case of insanity
Her name was Pauline she lived in a tree

She was a no one who killed her baby
She sent her letter from the country
She was an animal

This is NOT an anti-abortion song. Johnny Rotten said it's neither pro- or anti-- abortion, just thought provoking

What's with pronouncing some interpretations better than others? Let the really obvious truth about this be told. Regardless of later denials when being anti-abortion became a hanging offence amongst the young and trendy, it is extremely obviously against abortion. With trendy issues like this, it's truly insidious the level of deceit to cover up the obvious and sickening to see Lyndon try to make up some ludicrous story to pretend it was not a strong angry statement against the killing of unborn people. I rate your ratings system with a quarter of one star.

I heard Lydon speaking on this. Yes, he accepts a woman’s “right to choose.” No, this song is not pro-abortion, but pro-life. John’s speaking for the child is clear. Ask him today in the light of partial birth abortion, never mind the awful process. The song brings all that out. Lydon often talks shit but, his songs talk anarchy and yet he will tell you he loves his country, just hates media and big shot, bullshit. ✌️

    Bodies

This song is both pro and anti abortion And is also neither. It is not a statement either way. It is a reflection of attitudes and the way the press uses them. Whatever john’s personal experience as mentioned by other comments it is him saying ‘you’re gonna get judged by the press and their idiot moralising readers whatever you do so fuck em’

I believe this is another lyrics set which was inspired by an article in the news of that time.

An anti or pro abortion argument was going on at the time and an article appeared which was about a young woman who miscarried in her factories toilet’s and just went back to her workbench. Some daily mail express telegraph type readers thought this showed how disgusting young people’s attitudes were.

Some better commentators put forward the view that She was distressed by what had happened especially since she was hiding her pregnancy from her family.

At the time a young woman being pregnant outside marriage and especially as a result of possible casual sex was considered by some to be obviously because due to promiscuity etc the better more compassionate commentators suggested that to jump to the conclusion she was promiscuous was horrible as she could just as easily be traumatised by rape or sexual abuse by a relative.

I believe john’s lyrics suggest his disgust at news outlets which play to the so called moral majority etc without even finding out the facts about what happened.

The song is a condemnation of public shaming.

It says it’s her business and she may need help so fuck off and leave her alone.

    Do not judge

Personally I say the same about the anti-abortion crowd of busybodies

It’s her business so fuck off and leave her alone.

My interpretation was posted instantly with an immediate assessment added by this site that it was a 'poor interpretation'. All interpretations which differed from the pro-choice pipe dream position that such lyrics could be other than anti-abortion are judged, in seconds, as 'poor'. I challenge that assessment. I've given a very well written and analysed interpretation, which should not be called 'poor' because I won't toe the political line on abortion. What John Lyndon said re the lyrics is not credible as other than PC posturing after the fact of a wonderful anti-abortion anthem.

Anybody who can seriously believe these lyrics are not anti-abortion is deluded. It's absurd and clearly an attempt to dodge the inevitable bullying and ostracization the pro-life (especially from the Left/Anarchist side) celebrity would face. Record sales would suffer and they would be snubbed or bullied by media to admit the obvious - they are pro-life lyrics, outstandingly so. ONly the bravest Lefty (like myself) admits to being anti-abortion as the same Left which is obsessed with bullying is the worst bully itself with dissenting views. Who knows how many are pro-life because most people aren't game to say they are, especially types like the Sex Pistols or me, left wing alternative types. good on them for making them up. shame on them for lying about their true meaning.

Johnny wrote it after his girlfriend miscarried, and people thought that she had an abortion, even when they really wanted the child. It was, for lack of a better word, his "angry song", though almost any of their songs are Johnny's "angry song."

It's anti abortion, it's loud and some of it's lyrics were very daring for it's time "Fuck this and fuck that, fuck it all and fuck the fucking brat"
