Simon & Garfunkel: Mrs. Robinson Meaning
Mrs. Robinson Lyrics
Jesus loves you more than you will know.
God bless you, please Mrs. Robinson.
Heaven holds a place for those who pray,
Hey, hey, hey
We'd like to know a little bit about your for our files
We'd like to...

These lyrics are a the words of a 60's cynic. He is cynical about the institutions around him and fears that he himself is seling out. Whoever Mrs. Robinson is, there are these unnamed authorities who want to know a little about her "for their files", "sympathetic eyes" who want "to help her". They pacify her with saccharine religious thoughts. She, in their minds, is incapable ofdetermining her own identity.
The writer then looks for a beacon to lead him out. Is there anyone who hasn't sold out? who isn't hiding the truth? Certainly not the politicians! Enter Joe DiMaggio - one of the the last ones Simon remembers who kept his integrity. -
It is true the song was originally written about "mrs. Roosevelt". The meaning of the song deals with the changing of the united states to a police state or new world order through the new deal. The first verse clearly deals with trading economic security for police state..."look around you, all you see are sympathetic eyes - stroll around the grounds until you feel them all.".
The second verse deals with the secretive nature of this changing of the guard. The third verse concludes that the change is complete.."any way you look at it you loose." ( Joe DiMaggio is an aside to sports as an opiate for the masses). The song is played against the innocence of the former first lady who is not an active part of this change. Though powerless, she prays for salvation. -
Joe Dimagio was offended his name was used in the song, until it was explained to him that the song was saying he is a hero.

This song was originally written about Mrs. Roosevelt, the first lady. It was later used in the movie, The Graduate, which is why people always assume the song is about an affair.
-
This song Refers to "Mrs. Robinson" in a context that was never released to the public, rumour speculated that she was a secret love affair that Art Garfunkle had with his best friend's mother. The song reveals many issues that Art realised as he grew older such as Mrs. Robinsons secret drug addiction with Marijuana, although she was apparently very religious after her drug addiction was uncovered she was commited into a rehabilitation homestead where she supposedly made a full recovery. At the time Joe Dimagio who is mentioned in the song was an idol in the public's eyes, the struggeling nation looked to him to save the country; Simon and Art ask where has he gone, he was gone out of reach of the country, he couldn't help.
