This was a rare foreign language song to hit #1 on the Billboard charts in the USA.
The artist was Janine Deckers, a Belgian girl who was then a novice in the Dominican order of nuns (she left the order before she ever took final vows). She recorded this song in French under the name "Soeur Sourire," which meant "Sister Smile." In America, she was called The Singing Nun.
The lyrics tell the life story of St. Dominic, the founder of the Dominican orders of priests, monks and nuns. During the time that King John (aka John Lackland, the brother of Richard the Lion-hearted) ruled England, there was a large group of heretics in Europe known as the Albigensians.
The song tells how Dominic travelled about Europe, dressed very simply, and fought against the Albigensian heretics by eloquent preaching and by prayer (Dominic pretty much invented the Rosary).
