Cities in Dust Lyrics

Water was running; children were running
You were running out of time
Under the mountain, a golden fountain
Were you praying at the Lares shrine?
But ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend

I originally thought it was about Sodom and Gomorrah.it speaks of a shrine and lies. But then the lyrics "pouring down your gaping mouths" made me think of Pompeii and the bodies found there with there mouths open in an eternal scream.

Siouxsie said "Cities in Dust" was inspired by a trip to Pompeii in Greece which was destroyed by the explosion of a nearby volcano burying thousands of people in molten ash. Some of these well preserved bodies have been coasted in plaster & can be seen Greece. This song is not however a literal recount of the tragedy. These lyrics could be used to describe anyone's fall from grace, for example, a disgraced public figure or Politician. Falling from grace is a common theme in some of the Banshees lyrics
