Sir Sly: High Meaning
Song Released: 2017
High Lyrics
I’ve been smoking on the peace pipe
I’ve been wondering just what would peace be like
I’ve been staring into headlights
Swallow me whole, finding my peace of mind
I’m just trying to seize the moment
Trying to love the little...

I love a reach on song lyrics much as the next chick. But cmon. The whole. Damn. Song. Is about getting bent outta shape on your weapon of choice and how that's not always a bad thing.
It's not 'High on Life'.
It's just damn 'High'. -
The first lines: “I’ve been smoking on the peace pipe / I’ve been wondering just what would peace be like” he’s been giving peace a strong consideration, equating “smoking on the peace pipe” to basically the phrase “a penny for your thoughts” “I’ve been staring into headlights / Swallow me whole, finding my peace of mind” He has been thinking so hard, and really really thinking fondly about peace so much so that he’s completely zoned out, like a deer in headlights. Engulfed in thought, trying to calm himself down because war and chaos are scary and peace must be possible. “I’m just trying to seize the moment / Trying to love the little things, even if they’re hard to love” basically means that he’s trying to enjoy the small things, even if it’s hard to see the novelty in them. Because, after all, you’re alive, and that more than a lot of people can say. He’s also trying to love everything. Every single thing he sees is a miracle of life or a salvation story or even just something new and exciting, even if it looks rough, you need to be able to see the light. “A monument to love unspoken
Carved into stone / Unwilling to come undone” The monument of love unspoken is a symbol for anything you may do for another that may symbolize love or care, but doesn’t expicitly say so. It’s “carved into stone” and “unwilling to come undone” because, as with love, you can’t take it back. There will be love forever, it will never be undone. And now, the Chorus: “It feels good to be running from the devil / Another breath and I’m up another level” He’s saying that with every step he takes, he furthens himself and the ones he loves from “the devil”, which in this case symbolizes chaos and war. And it feels good, to finally be ahead of the wave, and to have strong, cemented hope for the future. Every breath he takes is a breath of fresh air, and another feeling of calmness and hope as they are distanced from chaos and move into peace and love. “It feels good to be up above the clouds / It feels good for the first time in a long time now” He’s saying that it feels good to finally be above the clouds as opposed to “under the weather” and see light and happiness for the future. He sees hope for the first time in a long time, it’s looking up for him. “I remember back in Oakland / I was lying there in rapture on the bathroom floor” He was lying in complete and utter astonishment that the world is as bad as it is and no has noticed, and being really messed up by this realization. “Moving hotel to hotel / Out on the road, no idea really what’s in store” He’s traveling a long distance, looking for peace but still never finding it and just hoping that this “devil” isn’t around the next corner. “Light it up just like a flashlight / Let it shine, let it rise just like a foreign sun” Be the light in the dark. Be the one that takes charge and promotes peace and leads the way forward. Although it may be awkward and new, it’s still something vaguely similar and has the same, cemented ideas as before, but with mild uncertainty, but needs to be stronger than ever. “Turn it over and it’s capsized / It’s finally done, the battle's lost yet I feel I’ve won” Flip the world upside down. Make old things new and new things newer. Everything will at first be chaotic, but he knows that in then end, it was always have been the best decision, and it will turn into prosperous peace. “I’m high, staring at the ceiling / Sending my love, what a wonderful feeling” He’s back home now, just having been zoned out at the ceiling the whole time. He sends his best wishes, and feels good for what he’s done, even if it was only in a trip. “What comes next, I see a light / I’m along for the ride as I’m taking flight” He now sees a light, and he is no longer in control of the trip. He is merely along for the ride as he goes higher and higher.
He’s literally high the whole time. All of the peace he insured was hypothetical and simply made up in his head. When he wakes up, he knows this and needs the next trip, as we all would. The cycle repeats, as do the following choruses.
This is simply my take on an amazing and deep song. I hope you found this interesting and eye opening. Feel free to correct me any way you see fit, but for now this is the only interpretation I have. -
Obviously it means drugs!!
