Sonata Arctica - Replica Meaning
Replica Lyrics
-
In fact the guy is just dead since the start... This is a beautiful love ballad about a soldier who died at war.
At first when you read you can easily understand the story about a shell-shocked veteran... with post-traumatic syndrom. There's many hints about that. But if you go with the under meaning... Not only his soul is dead but also he is !
There is a lot of foreshadowing in this song leading to the punch : the guy is dead... Look at this :
It's easier if you don't see standing on my own two feet. (he is laying !!)
you ask are all my dreams fulfilled (a wish for someone who is dead maybe)
The light is green, my slate is clean (he can go now everything is in order)
New life to fill the hole in me (a new life – after dead – begin)
I had no name, last December, Christmas Eve I can't remember. (the moment he died… he was an unknown soldier at this time )
I was in a constant pain, I saw your shadow in the rain. (he suffer and see this person a last time)
I painted all your pigeons red (painting the pigeon who send messages was a code in WWII… red can be referred to as the blood color…. It’s a dead message)
I wish I had stayed home instead (he wouldn’t be dead and would be with her)
And at last : Remeber me? Before the war. I'm the man who lived... (He don't live anymore!!)
You can also notice the way there is a pause between ''lived'' and ''next door'' in the beginning... :) -
This song talks of a current common man who is forced to go to war ... the man sees this as an opportunity to observe the wars from another point of view and maybe so, understand them better. But instead, all the violence, massacres and deaths he experimented brutalized his soul. He became numb. It Expresses that the man is no longer the same. It's just a replica.
And as it says at last: ''Remember me? Before the war. I'm the man who lived.'' meaning that he is now a living dead
Sorry for the grammar.
