He's talking about how the protagonist in the story he wrote was beaten and hated by his stepdad when he was a child he would only beat the him when the mother was not present

It sounds as if he has been assaulted or is talking from the point of a woman who has been sexually assaulted in my opinion. Not too sure though just what I've picked up on.
