Supertramp: Breakfast in America Meaning
Song Released: 1979
Breakfast in America Lyrics
Cos She's the only one I've got
Not much of a girlfriend
Never seem to get a lot
Take a jumbo 'cross the water
Like to see America
See the girls in California
I'm hoping it's going to come true
But there's not a lot...
-
Yes he means he talking about an airplane the jumbo jet across the ocean but to conform with the song jumbo jet would not fit in with the next line

Breakfast in America was kind of a joke of a song, but still has a lesson to it. He starts the song talking about his plain girlfriend which is the only person who loves him. Then he states to fly to America because it was a dream of his. The he mentions he sees girls in California who are very beautiful. He then talks if he'll be able to get a hit song there because Supertramp is a Brittish band. He, as a kid, is in America and misses Britain. He asks for a Brittish dish for breakfast. Then creates a common superstision of,"They got to have em' in Texas, cause everyones a millionare". The superstition is that Texans will have the dish cause they're all rich. He is a sinner but a winner, or is a bad person but still gains. Another common superstition of American stars. He starts to make fun of himself and others until he gets money and recognition. Then he starts defending his girlfriend because she is the only one who loves him. Then talks about flying to America and seeing the girls of California hoping he can get a new girlfriend. Roger Hodgson has stated that all of this is his story with America, at least that America was his dream, when in reality it was no better than Britain. He saw America different on TV than in reality. The lesson is your dreams may not be what they seem.
