I've Gotta Get a Message to You Lyrics

The preacher talked to me and he smiled Said, "Come and walk with me, come and walk one more mile."

Now, for once in your life, you're alone
But you ain't got a dime, there's no time for the phone.

I've just got to get a message to you--...

I've always thought that the man who was murdered by this death row inmate was someone who had ended up winning the heart of the woman, and that he had been murdered because the man who is now about to be executed was angry with him for ending up with the woman whom he wanted.

When the murderer came to his senses, he realized that he had really hurt the woman, because he had killed her true love.

Now, he would like to make one last phone call to tell her how sorry he was, but there's no time.

In just a matter of minutes, he will have been executed, so he hopes that the minister will go to her and give her his message.

He also wanted her to know that he was okay with his execution, because he deserved to die after what he had done.

Personally, I'm not in favor of capital punishment, but I'm in favor of people realizing that they're accountable for the hurt they cause whenever they treat others badly, whether this is done as a murder or done as something like stealing from somebody, bullying somebody at school because it's the "in" thing to do, etc.

This song is about a condemned murderer on Death Row, who's going to be executed in an hour. This convict is desperate to make a last phone call to his wife or girlfriend, but the prison chaplain tells him that's not possible.

The man begs the chaplain to get word to the wife/girlfriend that he's sorry for all the pain he put her through.
