The Dresden Dolls: Coin Operated Boy Meaning
Coin Operated Boy Lyrics
sitting on the shelf he is just a toy
but i turn him on and he comes to life
automatic joy
that is why i want a coin operated boy
made of plastic and elastic
he is rugged and long-lasting
who could ever ever ask for...

#1 top rated interpretation:Well, you're all slightly right. It CAN be thought to be speaking of a dildo but there is a much much deeper meaning. This is the first song I've ever heard from them and I've heard it more times than I can bear to remember. It's all about how much she's been hurt by men and how she is torn between having her perfect "coin operated boy" and having the one the song is to. She's scared she'll get hurt again so she stays and tries to convince herself that the plastic is better because it can't hurt her even if it wanted to. Think about it and really listen to the lyrics. Drink them in like fine wine...

#2 top rated interpretation:No! Not about a dildo. If you knew ANYTHING about the band, you would understand that. It's about loneliness. *Mutters about insolent fools*

#3 top rated interpretation:Amanda has told me personally that the song is about being lonely. So there.

i think not 110% sure but i think that amanda wants a guy that is perfect but there isnt a boy like that not a real one anyway so she thinks it would be better to get a robot bf A.K.A a coin operated and one line sais that she was like too good for the other boys and she kinda broke them or their hearts from nianh XD tnx!!!

It may not be about a dildo, but the lyrics could easily be interpreted as such. So much of the lyrics fit that particular interpretation.

Who the hell ever heard of a coin-operated dildo??
