I believe this song is about children being in the grips of severe depression following the loss of a parent.

It seems to be that the song is simply about a terrifying nightmare, one that is confusing and highlighted with images from the singer's past day. This is evident in the scattered thoughts and constant "Oh, no, this isn't real." Background vocals. The artist is making a statement about how we, as humans, can never seem to escape our nightmares until we wake up (and even then, we never learn from them. We simply forget they ever even existed and carry on with out lives.)
