The Shins - Split Needles Meaning

Split Needles Lyrics
I've done myself an impossible crime,
I have to paint myself a hole and fall inside.
And if it's far enough in sight and rhyme,
I get to wear another dress and count in time.
Oh, won't you do me the favor, man,
Of forgiving...
-
This is about having sexual indecisiveness and the expectation for everyone to pick one side or the other. First verse is cross dressing. Last verse the odd conviction is directly a reference as well. The last being that You’re finally golden boy.

I think this had to do with the band's internal turmoil. I think James had ideas that he was trying to get across in the song but the band was not on the same page. "Too many summers you've enjoyed to spin the wheels and set you up with some odd conviction". The odd conviction was what James disagreed with. Once the music was written James added the lyrics that represented how he felt in writing the song with the other band members having say in the structure of the composition that he was forced to record. "It's like I'm pushed on the handle bars of a blind man's bike". The band took a long break after the album was done and James then fired the drummer and guitar player.
