The Strumbellas: Spirits Meaning
Song Released: 2016
Spirits Lyrics
Spirits in my head and they won't go
I got guns in my head and they won't go
Spirits in my head and they won't--
I've been looking at the stars tonight
And I think, oh, how I miss that bright...

#2 top rated interpretation:I don't need to interpret it. Simon Ward himself said it “Basically the song is about fighting your inner demons. Trying to change and become a better person in life. I write songs to reflect where I’m at in life, and this song is me saying to the world that I’m doing my absolute best right now to be a good person.” Bam. You're welcome.

#3 top rated interpretation:Genuinely being at war with yourself. The guns representing the times that you’ve been hurt and spirits being the memories that won’t leave

My Father died in Vietnam ! RIP. Today was His Heavenly Birthday! In reality, if He would have made it through! They used a term shell shock or nowadays PTSD. It might have set in? So He’s in a better place! My Brother tragically died from suicide in 1983, RIP. Prior to His passing, I myself suffered with those thoughts! Young and depressing thoughts not very fulfilled! In retrospect! Present day, I’m a 60 year old Grandpa with a 36 year career and a stable marriage of 38 years! God Blessed the Child who makes it through! So, I agree with all the interpretations!

as a person who constantly suffers from anxiety disorder, I think this song is about the same. it talks about the suffocating feeling of being trapped in your mind forever with this feeling of anxiety which is often accompanied by overthinking; hence, 'the gun still rattles', meaning that the overthinking about what happened still runs in your head. while 'guns' represent the action that has happened which affected you, 'spirits' represent the traumatic thoughts in your head that still persists even after the incident or the event happened long ago.
on a general level of interpretation, it is about fighting the inner demons which hold you back in life and thriving in your life and just being yourself and the fact, that nothing is so powerful that it can beat you.
if you have any similar story to mine, or are struggling out there, just know that there are other people like you too and you can make it out too, just like how we all are trying :) -
"I got guns in my head and they won't go" I think it is like his inner demon puts a gun on him to think about the most hurting moment repeatedly..that's called overthinking and it cause depression so that anxiety constantly hit him." Spirit in my head and they won't go" he is fighting against his spirit or inner self or his subconscious mind continuously because his spirit never let him go or never let him get out of depression.
-
I think it's about the constant feeling of anxiety and angst. The 'guns' and 'spirits' in the head mean that there is this constant nagging feeling that anxiety brings. But it ends on a hopeful note, that despite such traumatic mental conditions, the people who have 'guns' in their head will finally be able to live to their fullest.

¨I got guns in my head and they won´t go¨ He is at war with himself.
¨Spirits in my head and they wont go¨ It is himself telling him that he isn´t good enough.

I can’t be 100% sure but I interpret the song to mean a person is strong and willing to fight for what they know is right - and they are happy to be the best person they can be.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
