The Wombats: Jump into the Fog Meaning
Jump into the Fog Lyrics
I bet they charge by the hour here
The kind of place where you should bring your own UV ray
It's not a big problem with me, love
You don't look that hygienic anyway
I'm only here...
-
I think the song is about promiscuous sex, nihilism and all-round modern hedonism trying to fill the insatiable void of loneliness, narcicissm and self-loathing in the person telling the story. A theme that resonates with many of us in this age of disposable sex with the inherent risks of heartaches, betrayals, and venereal disease.
I don't think its about a prostitute as some have suggested, as I get the sense the other partner in the story is just another lost soul trying to also forget/destroy/lose themselves rather than face the gaping maw of reality.
Better to be nihilsitic and uncaring rather than risk climbing a 'ladder' (i.e being sober/stay in a committed relationship) that's 'too steep' when you inevitably 'slide back down again'.
I think it a really sad song.
It's a self-inflicted, selfish, nihilistic heartbreak. -
SHAKE THE FOUNDATIONS?
My God, it doesn't even SOUND like he's singing those lyrics. The correct lyrics are:
'I wanna twist the structure of my average day'
Right, that's it. -
I've just noticed something else!
'Snakes and ladders abandoned here love'
Dear God, 'abandoned'? That, yet again, makes no sense! The correct lyrics are:
'Snakes and ladders are banned in here, love'
Case closed. -
And also, you're using the wrong lyrics, it's actually:
'In hope that we hit the ground upright'
It's honestly cringeworthy, 'You know that we hit the ground upright' oh dear God, that sentence doesn't even make any sense. Before putting some lyrics that are incorrect anyway, at least use the correct words to replace the wrong ones. -
You're all wrong.
A quote given from a band member himself stated:
"loosely based on a night I had in Bergen when we toured there back in the day, before we had a record deal or anything. I don't know it's just quite a nihilistic, debaucherous song about having promiscuous sex!" -
I somewhat disagree with Ota Otaria.
"Jump in to the Fog" is the realization that life shouldn't be governed by strict rules and conservative decisions, from my perspective. Enjoy the unknown. Maybe even more existential is the idea that, life being as fragile as it is, you still live it to the extreme and hope the hand your dealt is a good one (your hand in life -- let someone else's legs break or brains smash).
In my opinion, the first verse isn't about a dating couple going to an ambiguous place. He's clearly taking a dirty hooker and banging her in a dirty, pay-by-the-hour hotel. In the chorus, he wants to "shake the foundations of his average day" by doing something crazy. He feels dead inside (maybe at his office job or whatever), so he jumps into the unknown and subsequently feels alive.
The second verse, to me, is partly a reference to religion, or any such controlling ideology, and the ridiculous ideas of sexual conservatism. He's saying that he's happy to have found someone willing to give it up so easily, even if it's frowned upon. For every ladder, there's a snake waiting around the corner. But fuck it. Do it anyway.
The bridge describes his mistakes, obviously, and that there's some regret, but that life's more fun this way. Pretty simple. -
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
