Third Eye Blind: How's It Gonna Be Meaning
Song Released: 1997
How's It Gonna Be Lyrics
Before you take a swing
I wonder what are we fighting for
When I say out loud
I want to get out of this
I wonder is there anything
I'm going to miss
I wonder how it's going to be
When...

#1 top rated interpretation:This is the ultimate break up song. Basically you know the relationship is over and its inevitable that you are going to end things but you have been with this person for so long that its hard to imagine life without them. You say you don't care but you know deep down that its killing you. All of the friends you shared won't be there anymore, and there will be no one left to talk to.

2TOP RATED
#2 top rated interpretation:This guy's relationship has turned sour, but he does remember the good times. He contemplates how everything will be from now on if the relationship ends. Will his significant other even care? He wonders whether or not he's doing the right thing.

I believe it's about when you're significant other isn't around anymore. Everybody takes music a different. I guess it just depends on what's going on in your life at the moment.

I think this song conveys the immense emotion and struggle the boyfriend has trying to decide if he will break up with his significant other of quite some time (his best friend, lover, soulmate, his air...). He's spent his 24/7 with this person and knows "her" better than anyone on this planet (and her, him) and, suddenly, everything will change and they won't "know" each other anymore. They won't even be acquaintances (for some time there after the break up) and possibly never speak again depending upon how the break up went down. Will they each move on, will the other find someone they are happier with--or appear to be happier with, will they do all of the same things you two did, will this new person replace you and suddenly be "the one"? It's a traumatizing, heart wrenching experience. The relationship had extreme passion and highs & lows and can be volatile at times. She is frustrated with the situation and the communication has become fighting rather than listening. He is at his breaking point and feels he needs to move on/ the grass is greener, but he DOES care and he says he wants to "get myself back in"--to me, he misses her and wishes it could work, but feels there has been too much damage to go back and continue; he is expressing his emotion struggle and turmoil between his mind and heart. He will never stop loving her--he cares--and she cares. It's a strange thing--a break up with someone you are so connected with on every level where you feel like one and it's drastically different. It's like a death of sorts, but if the other person doesn't miss you and just moves on it doesn't feel like you died (b/c you would miss that person then)--it feel like you & the relationship never existed and you start to question if any of it actually ever happened. Maybe the decision is regretted and you get back together, but the thought of that not happening is crushing.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

I always took the song as how's it going to be without that something or someone in your life.
-
Everyone's saying that it is about a break up between a couple. I don't disagree, but why focus on just the human aspect of it. I think it could relate to getting over anything in life, like a major obstacle. The song could be someone reflecting about that obstacle. You're so used to this obstacle that you don't know how it's gonna be without it. The human relationship is what the song takes form as because most people can relate to this.

It sounds like a break up song, but honestly i can't shake the feeling that its about suicide...'hows it gonna be, when you don't know me, any more'
-
This song is about charlize theron she used t date the lead singer for five years

I think most interpretations here are pretty well spot on, except for one part. In the first verse..."I'm only pretty sure, I can't take anymore. Before I take a swing I wonder; What are we fighting for." I get the distinct impression that the bf/gf relationship is over because the girlfriend and the narrator's best friend are messing around with each other, which means not only did he split with his girlfriend, but he also loses his best friend, who chose a girl over their friendship, and it ultimately results in fisticuffs, as per rules pertaining to breaking the "bros' before ho's" directive.
