    A backslider is a person that has fallen out of graces with their church, and must atone for their sins by being reborn, usually through baptism.

    I always thought this was a song about the writer's faith and testimony of his savior. Although, after watching the video I am doubting the sincerity of that. It seems as though it may be a sarcastic message regarding hypocritcal Christians. It may be but let me remind you that Jesus said that the wheat and the tare grow together until the day of the harvest. He always said you will know the genuine by their fruit. The fruit of the spirit. In other words the fruition of their relation with God that we can see evidence of. If I covered the song I would like to do it in a different light or a more sincere message about faith in God.
