Starlight Lyrics

So I've been thinking lately
That I should try to grow up
Maybe start to show up on time

But let's be real here baby
It's not the way that we work
So why waste the sunshine?

I guess it's kinda funny

"Starlight" is a song about making the best of what you have. The lyrics suggest that this young couple in the song are pretty much broke but they still have each other and that's all that matters. Since they're broke, there's nothing to hold them back from each other. The narrator says that she doesn't want to say goodnight because that'd be like giving up: "Don't want to say goodnight, let's live it up, Don't have to say we're giving up if you, walk me home tonight I swear I could fly beside you or under your starlight." The starlight is significant in two ways: One, it's a literal representation of the couple being out under the stars at night, two, it's a figurative representation of their love. It's almost like they're projecting their own starlight because they are so infatuated with each other. A crucial part of the song can be found in the bridge: "You'll keep me warm tonight, I don't need nice things to help me sleep at night. And no one understands me but I'm telling the truth, Cuz we can live in our own world as long as you love me." She doesn't need him to buy her nice things, she just needs him to love her. Nobody else can really understand their love for each other, but as long as they're together, it doesn't matter.
