Two Door Cinema Club: Changing of the Seasons Meaning
Song Released: 2013
Changing of the Seasons Lyrics
It's so much colder
But it was no surprise
Did you ever
Get to know me?
'Cause it has never been so plain to see
When you say you won't forget me
I can tell you that's not true
'Cause every day since you...
-
I am 100% aware this is a breakup song, but hear me out.
Picture this- two friends, one of them is on their death bed and the other knows this, but is in denial that it impacts them as much as it really does. Que my dissection.
"So its over? I didn't realize" - Unaware that the friend died as soon as they did
"It's so much colder" - everything is really setting in, and the person is realizing what really happened
"But it was no surprise" - The person knew the friend was gonna die, but is obviously still upset
"did you ever get to know me?" - The person feels they didn't get to have a long enough relationship with the friend, and feels more could have been done/said
"When you say you wont forget me, I can tell you that's untrue
Cause everyday since you left me I've thought less and less of you" - The friend told the person we're following that they wouldn't forget them, but the person is denying this, saying that they'll get over it soon enough, so they doubt that the friend will remember them if they don't remember the friend.
"and I've worn out all the reasons to keep on knocking at your door" - the person is trying to come up with excuses to not visit their "door", or in this case, their grave
"Could be the changing of the seasons, but I don't love you anymore" - After a while, they're still in denial that they care about the friend and refuse to believe that it affects them
There's a few more bits I could dig into, but yeah. here's my two cents. -
Obviously it's a breakup song. The guy seems to be at a part of the relationship where he is starting to get over her and is starting to understand it wasn't meant to be and not a good relationship.
He says it was no surprise, he was expecting it. I've always believed that this relationship was one-sided (He says you never got to know me). He knows the relationship was bad now but also knows that she will fade away. -
I may be wrong but I believe this song is about how a guy's relationship with a girl ended and how it was never a good relationship. It also talks about how he has no feelings for her and how he forgets about her and doesn't care
