Two Door Cinema Club: Undercover Martyn Meaning
Song Released: 2010
Undercover Martyn Lyrics
And she spoke words of wisdom
To the basement people, to the basement, many surprises await you
In the basement, people, in the basement
You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find...

1TOP RATED
#1 top rated interpretation:It's about a bullshiter bullshitting his way through some shit.
-
2TOP RATED
#2 top rated interpretation:what i believe this song is about is, a nazi guard (ss.) and how he is made to find jews, well before he the war starts he is in love with a jewish woman, but during the war he takes his country first and finds his old love and brings his love in. basically its putting ones country in time of crises before love. a sad thing it is

I interpret it as being about exploitation ("out on the main street completing your mission.") It's from the point of view of a "friend" who's just taking advantage of the already struggling girl. He's giving her praise and might be genuinely into her ("she spoke words that would melt in your hand. She spoke words of wisdom.") He appears to be helpful; when she's sick at a party or a bar, he takes her home either to prevent her from making another mistake, or if it's connected to the next line, to stop her from doing sex work ("sick in the car seat because you're not up to going out/on the main street completing your mission.") But, for as much as he wants to look like a helper, she doesn't really have any choice in the matter. He's taking her home whether she likes it or not ("you hid their last time, you know we're gonna find you")

it's about the people who are too damaged to participate in life. they're shut ins. they never grow up. agoraphobes. hypochondriacs. hikikomori. they never really experience life, and because of it they never do anything with their lives. because of this, they can never find their purpose in life.

Has anyone else read the book 'faithful place' by tana french? The story is completely summarised by this song. Everytime I hear it I think of that book.i'm sure that's what the song is about!!
SPOILER: if you do wanna read the book (do, it's brilliant), don't read on!!
It's about a young couple in Ireland where the male character adores the female character and hangs on her every word. She goes missing after failing to meet him as planned so they can run off together, and the lead cop has suspicions about the basement of a house nearby. Her remains are found there. -
I was thinking it was about human trafficking of childern..sick in the car seat cause your not up to going...going where to the main streets to complete your mission..you hid there last time
-
ok so when I first heard the song and looked at the lyrics, I thought it was about a kidnapping and how this girl keeps getting away from the kidnapper and the kidnapper keeps her in the basement of somewhere but that’s really basic thinking and the other people on here seem to be more creative and some of their answers make sense but then there’s the ones that say nothing helpful but yeah that’s just what I think
-
I think the song is about a guy who loves a girl but the girl doesn't love him and so the girl running away from him.
-
They wrote 'undercover Martyn' about Rodger Martyn crooks who was friends with them and one of my CSSM leaders.
-
i think the person on Jan. 10th is right- because a Martyr is a person who stands up for something they believe in, even though it leads to persecution. (but this is usually religiously) anyways that means he was just undercover... an undercover martyn.. or martyr
