White Lies: Strangers Meaning
Strangers Lyrics
A whisper that knew my name
Is this how your heart treats all strangers,
With love and affection?
Then I feel cold and empty
I've got a sense of urgency
I've gotta make this happen
No...

he realizes as he's sleeping next to this person that they are not in love with him the way that he as hoped them to be. the line about he heard a whisper that knew his name means that dreadful voice in all of us that the other person never wants to hear, "no, i'm not in love with you." he realizes this all of it, but he realizes this when the other person is sleeping or at least sleeping in the sense that they are no longer conscious of them. the line, "the morning hunts you down," is the other person's realization or courage to tell you that "no, i'm not in love with you." he has to change their mind, make them fall in love with him either for the first time or again before they tell him that awful news to his face, to his heart. the line, "strangers don't hide" means that he too has this voice deep inside of him, and he too is feeling the sense that he too wants to tell the other person that maybe he doesn't love them either, but he's afraid to...even if it's all to familiar.
