Audioslave: Heaven's Dead Meaning
Heaven's Dead Lyrics
Hide in the hours before sunrise
Pray for me not, I won't lose sight
Of where I belong and where you lie
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
For the best time you've...
-
Anchor the night, open the sky
Hide in the hours before sunrise
Pray for me not, I won't lose sight
Of where I belong and where you lie
This passage makes me think of how he just wants the night to stay anchored in place, like on that first night so we could be together longer, hiding under the covers dreading the morning light. He's also trying to make it known that she doesn't have to worry because he's never gonna leave her side, right there where she lies beside her in her bed.
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
For the best time you've had
He knows her hopes and dreams and sees them as wishes flying through the sky and how she's sad because she thinks it's too late for them to come true, but I don't think he thinks they're out of time, just the opposite, I think he thinks the best times are just ahead. So he's trying to convince her to have hope and never give up/give in, hence the repetition of the main verse.
Shipwreck the sun, well I'm on your side
An army of one, onward we will ride
And whisper your songs, birds to the air
We'll bury all of our burdens there
Again He just wants to kill the sun, and all of it's brightness and prolong the night because in the morning he knows she has to leave...Again he's reassuring her of his loyalty and how he's gonna stand by her...so she can let her worries be as carefree little birds in the sky and all of her troubles and burdens, along with his, can be buried not under foot but off fluttering in the breeze, carefree, far away.
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
For the best time you've had
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
For the best time you've had
(mini guitar solo 2:18)
This is the tie in the song that brings it all together for me. That little riff is so simple yet so peaceful. No words, just notes dancing on the strings...and the last chimes to round it off are just magical. Sorry I get lost in solos and most instrumental music with no lyrics. I listen to a lot of Joe Satriani, but that's a whole nother run....
Best time you had
For the best time you had
Heaven's dead when you get sad
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
For the best time you've had
Heaven's dead when you get sad
I see your wishes flying
Out of time
I'll take it all, arrows or guns
Hundreds or more to save you from one
Save you from one
Heaven's dead when you get sad
He's kinda throwing in a new concept right at the end there but it's still sticking with the theme of protection for her and how he'll gladly suffer anything to keep her from feeling pain or heartache again. He cares for her immensely.
Heaven's dead when you get sad, so don't be sad, be happy, and Let not your heart be troubled....
