This song is about growing up and all the little superstitions that kids have. We all have made some sort of story about what we don't like, just as we all have looked on our ceilings and seen a spider.
Maybe, for the deeper meaning of the song, we all encounter death, being entangled, and also unsavory characters in our lives.
I also think that this is like being in denial about something. The fact that the spiders death was not their fault, and the "Try pickin' on your own damn size"
