Ben Folds: Carrying Cathy Meaning

Album cover for Carrying Cathy album cover

Carrying Cathy Lyrics

Her window was hung like a painting
She worried it might come to life
She stared for hours
So obsessed was I and self-absorbed that I
Didn't see that she was crying
There was always someone carrying
There was always someone carrying
Always...

If you look at the lyrics, it's pretty obvious of what this song is about, but what the heck? This is about a girl named Cathy, told from a friend or boyfriend's perspective. It's obvious he feels remorse for her actions, and feels that he had a hand in her death. He tries to "explain" to everyone around him that Cathy's different, and seemed to be embarrassed by that fact, but is shocked back into reality when his girlfriend commits suicide.

Cathy is a little bit nuts. Maybe she's not certifiable, but she is definitely unstable. Ben has dated her, but realized that he was unable to help her. He was "over his head".

Everyone in Cathy's life has gone to great lengths to help or "carry" her, but she slips further and further away from them anyway.

To me, this song is about a priveleged girl named Cathy who's spent her whole life being coddled by and protected her parents and brothers.

The narrarator is someone who was dating her or friends with her, but not very close to her, as he doesn't notice her deep depression.

She jumps out her window and kills herself and the narrarator is stricken with feelings of guilt.
