The song is about a guy whose life is a mess and he's looking back on his past. He fell for a girl but she left and it hurt. He's thinking about all the things he could have done with his life, some kinda fun (getting drunk at the dance and getting with the homecoming queen), others not so good (holding up a grocery store, getting hooked on drugs, going to jail "for 5 years and then 7 more"). And he realizes the girl didn't care cause she kept him hanging and then just left. He says he threw out the song he wrote about her but pretty sure this is it
