He's talking about his relationship with his father being tough and hard. His father wanted him to turn out differently than he did and Jaret wanted to live his own life the way he dreamed, and his father disagreed because he didn't believe Jaret would be successful going the direction he was going, so this caused their relationship between father and son to take a hard tumble and cause fights.

This song is about a father and a son. The son hasn't seen his father due to a fight he had with him. The part where he says 'Well I know it's been years not and I don't look the same. And the hopes and dreams you had for me you thought went down the drain' is saying that his father wanted his son to be someone successful. This isn't about a guy and a girl. It's about the hard relationship of a father and a son.
