Brad Paisley: He Didn't Have to Be Meaning
He Didn't Have to Be Lyrics
It always winds up being more like a job interview
My momma used to wonder if she'd ever meet someone
Who wouldn't find out about me and then turn around and run
I met the man I call my dad...
-
This song is amazing because Brad has a step-dad. A lot of us do. I never knew my dad, but I have an AMAZING step-dad. He didn't have to be there, but he is. I can relate to this song.

This is about a boy watching his mother go on dates and being turned down because of him (being the son). But she doesn't give up she keeps going on dates until one man that asked her on a date to the movies asked if her son would like to go. So of course the little boy is going to like him to begin with because he is the first man that wanted him to go as well. When he heard him ask for his mothers hand in marriage he prayed she said yes in which she does. So this is now the dad he never had. And now that he is older and is beginning a new family he wants to be the dad that his dad didn't have to be.
