Candlebox: Cover Me Meaning
Song Released: 1994
Cover Me Lyrics
When I walk alone
Cover me
When my stance it stumbles homes
Cover me
We’ll trip on through the sands of time
And cover me
Cause I’ve been branded
I’ve lost my mind
Lost my mind
But you’ll cover me yeah
Give me shelter fro the...

"Cover me is a three way conversation between myself and God. Cover me, over me, under me!" -
You all speak of religion as if it's bad and organized and a threat to human society. No where in the Bible does it say you must be in church on Sunday for you to believe in him. No where in the Bible does it say to join a church. No living human being knows if they are gonna get into a car accident today, tomorrow, next week or ever for that matter.. but you buy car insurance just in case. No living person knows for a fact that there is a heaven or hell no one knows for a fact there is a God or devil. But you should get God's insurance just in case.. oh it's free.

Simplicity, confusion, anger, disillusionment, humility, confession, acceptance, surrender, restoration... a recounting of one man's VERY COMMON and PERFECTLY REASONABLE, RATIONAL AND RESPECTABLE process of coming to terms and reasoning with his beliefs and, ultimately, the faith that sustains him throughout the process, despite his questioning, accusing and shaking his fist at GOD.
CLEARLY. -
The song is a conversation between him and God. The conversation is at different stages of his life. At first he's asking God to watch over him, which turns into anger because he begins to feel as if God isn't there for him. That's when the lyrics switch to "you over me" because he's no longer asking in a submissive manner, he's now talking to god as if he's saying "hey you, I'm the guy you forgot". When it switches to "you under me" it's gods response to him. After that it's almost a plea from The artist saying please cover me, the world is cruel why won't you help me. The artist is trying to show the struggle of man vs faith. Religion likes to say "just believe in God and he will take care of it" which leaves alot of people in a struggle with God because they feel that he isn't there for them the way they religion says he's suppose to be.

My interpretation may not be what it is about but, for me it is about an abusive relationship and submission.

I just saw them perform last fall. Before the song the singer explained his parents were very religious and imposed their beliefs on him. They rejected him when he chose to not follow their ridiculous beliefs.

Struggling with addiction and asking god to lookout

Kevin said on stage it's about organized religion and how it's f'ing up the world.

I feel "cover me" tells the story of a man and the love/hate relationship he has with a woman. It describes their lovemaking and the torn feelings of a man who needs her despite the feeling of utter brokeness he feels she has branded upon his broken mind and heart.
