Carrie Underwood: Wasted Meaning
Song Released: 2007
Wasted Lyrics
One tear hit the hard wood it fell like broken glass
She said, "Sometimes love slips away
And you just can't get it back, let's face it"
For one split second, she almost turned around
But that...

There are a lot of gaps in the song that allows for multiple interpretations but it seems to be that of a relationship that is completely devoid of emotional attachment and the couple had grown apart yet they stay together for whatever reason.
We do not know if the woman is leaving because of his alcohol problem but I'm sure it is a contributor as alcohol never "kills" the pain, it only makes it worse which comes out in the most horrible ways.
It is clear though that all of the colors in her life had faded meaning depression and the inability to face the fact that sometimes staying together drains the joy of living. She remembers a time when she could derive joy from simple things like "the still of the morning and the color of the night."
He seems to cope with the deep "lacking" by drinking. Maybe he drinks because it helps him to feel something. He cannot find the joy in life either and drinks to remember or feel the past.
We do not know if her leaving is what opened his eyes or if her leaving gave him hope for a new beginning, but this is a bone chilling song in that life is short and there is no point in "staying together etcfor the (insert; money, kids, etc whatever may be the reasons each couple hits this bottom)." Reminds me a lot of Wasted Time by The Eagles.
