   I think he speaking to the complexity of being in a live relationship. Despite the love you have for each other, don’t smother. We all need a little vacation from each other, to kind of refresh, to miss each other so to speak, even though part of me wants to be around you all the time. So, I’m not trying to hurt you, I love you and it’s hard to apologize for being human.

   Jan 14 anon, that's some serious projection there pal. Nothing in the lyrics says it's about cheating or coming back so you can cheat again. Seems to be more generally about a relationship that's falling apart and he wants to repair it so he's apologizing for his shortcomings and mistakes hoping its reciprocated.

   I think the song is about a guy who cheated his wife and the girl who he cheated with left him for whatever reason. Now he is pleading to his wife to take him back. He realizes the unconditional love that his wife have for him that no matter what he’s going through his wife is still there and serve’s him. I think for him not to be able to say sorry is a testament to his character. There are people who are just cowards and afraid to face the truth and yet still want to be served by his wife. He is not concerned about her feelings. It’s just about himself. In short he is selfish. That’s my take about the song Hard to Say I’m Sorry.

   Definitely a guy realising that his girl loves him unconditionally...he has been away on holiday without her and the words even lovers need a holiday far away from each other....it eases his mind as he has left her for a while for a holiday that maybe he cheated on her during. He is home to his broken girl and wants to tell her that what he has done isn't good but it happens...I get the feeling that it wont happen again and he wants her to hold him....he wants to say sorry but he cant find the words. Confusion....he wants to justify his actions but he has realised how much he missed her and how much he does actually love her. He wants to make up for his behaviour which has clearly hurt her.... .....
