Clairo: Bubble Gum Meaning
Bubble Gum Lyrics
But it's obvious I wanted to
Bubble gum down my throat and it's a curse
But my luck couldn't get any worse
'Cause I swallowed the bubble gum
Oh, and these seven years will be pretty dumb
Pink flowers grow from my...

#1 top rated interpretation:My interpretation is like when you want to say/or like someone (practically just wanting to do something) and never doing it. The overall regret of not being able to say or do something that will later on clasp onto you.“Cause i swallowed the bubblegum” like swallowing your feelings or words and just never letting them out in general. “These seven years will be pretty dumb” feeding into the myth of bubblegum taking 7 years to digest as well as the feeling of it (bubblegum/feelings) also being stuck inside you. el o el this perfectly applies to me omg<33

#2 top rated interpretation:I think because of the "pink flowers grow from my skin", it could be one sided love. And, maybe what happened was since you get that feeling when it feels like there's something stuck in your throat, specifically bubble gum in this situation, it almost feels like you can't speak. Maybe, something happened between the two, or something was said, and they regretted it. I could be wrong, but like, maybe someone was in love with someone, and they didn't have a one sided love. But then, when an argument happened, bad things were said. And, due to that, they slowly drifted apart and it became one sided love. It could be the Hanahaki disease. This is just my interpretation on this song.

#3 top rated interpretation:I think that what Clairo meant by "I swallowed the bubble gum"is that she wanted to say something to someone about how she felt but she didn't think they would feel the same way.I also think when she said "I'd do anything for you but would you do that for me to" was her questioning how the other person felt about her, which is why she didn't say something.I could be wrong and to be fairly honest I probably am as I am a child under 13 but have a nice day everyone:)

This song talks about missing the chance to confess to your crush. The narrator has Unrequited love. She held her feeling back and lost the chance of confessing to her crush, which she regrets like the act of swallowing bubblegum. Like bubblegum, the pain will stick with her for a long time. The narrator also realizes many things the crush does for the pleasure of others and not her. This idea just causes her more pain. Instead of expressing her feelings, she just swallows them. In a way, the song is warning the listeners that they should take the risk and express their feeling. If they dont, the pain of watching their crush go on with someone else may be more painful than getting rejected.

i think the song is about a relationship between friends who can’t admit their feeling for one another, or atleast never acknowledged their feelings for one another. eventually they move on but still have lingering regret about everything.

I think this song is about a person who couldnt express their feelings , and how they now regret it , and would do anything for the person . and to rewind and show them the feelings they deserve. - L<33

I think it's about one sided love. Like you can't say or do what you want. They have regretted it for 7 years or wanted to do it for 7 years.

I think the song is about someone you love but you never tell them how you truly feel. “I swallowed the bubble gum” this is showing how they didn’t say what the wanted to say. It then continues to say “these seven years will be pretty dumb” which is the myth that gum stays inside you for seven years, this also means they are going to have the feeling of regret for never telling their true feelings.
