I've always seen this song as a metaphor of climbing the corporate ladder and trying to reach business success. When you reach the top you probably will be engulfed in flames and lava.

I am pretty certain this song refers to fighting in World War I. One of the keys is the stanza about 'crosses of green and crosses of blue- your friends didn't make it through'. As has been mentioned elsewhere Green Cross and Blue Cross were German chemical agents. Another thing that leads credence to this idea is the frequent whistle blasts in the latter part of the song. Officers often signaled the commencement of an attack with a long whistle blast. Whistle sounds are in several places in the song. If we accept this interpretation, the 'crack in Mother Earth' would be a trenchline and lava would represent the places where the battle was hottest.

It hangs together but there's nothing dispositive- an excellent song anyway, especially with the instrumental finish.

This is a hot and a awesome song that I got into that came out on''Genesis Seconds Out'' double album in 1977 , this song dance on a volcano was one of my favorites, to me is just a methaphor to do the cosmic dance of balance on top of the old gods of the old mythology that Phil Collins with Genesis was beginning to leave behind , not out of disrespect, but you know we all dance on the old without even knowing that we do. I did stop listening to this song for a while after may 18 1980, because of the Mount St.Helens volcano explosion, I kinda freakd out in a dusted haze, it was like a season in hell for me that year, but you know after the dust settles everything was cool again.
