Good Riddance (Time of your Life) Lyrics

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time

It's something unpredictable, but in the...

I agree with MOST of you, because he is having a hard time because his girlfriend or he is moving.

It is a song about a break up. It is from the point of view of one person breaking up with another. The one breaking up is telling the other that it may be crazy and difficult to get through, but they should not ask why, take this twist of fate, and use it to become a better person. They tell the other that they hope that the other enjoyed their time together. Simple, however the title "Good Riddance" implies a sense of disgust and relief. As if the other was a burden that had to be lifted.

The song, as stated by many before me, is about Armstrong's ex girlfriend, but, as stated by one, it can be applied to many situations. The whole lyric about the fork stuck in the road is an allusion to the poem by Robert Frost. This is pretty much about a tough decision in your life. When time grabs you by the wrist and directs you where to go, it means that you didn't have enough time to think out the decision well enough and rushed. So you ended up making a bad decision.

I think this is the best break-up/graduation/death/marriage/everything that you can think of song. Everything you need to feel depressed is in this song.

    enjoy it while you can

At the time the song was released, punk music (Green Day's type) was starting to be run over by the latest genre: rap. Just like classic rock was run over by disco. Since Green Day is so rebellious (or "punkish") they wrote a song no one would expect! They wrote a soft song to say, "See ya!" What's more punk than to write something not punk?! They always want to blow the minds of their fans and since they hardly ever write soft, sweet songs, they figure this would work great to give a last shot at blowing one more mind!! This is why I love Green Day.

A lot of these other interpretations seem ok, but I'm going to have to go with the girlfriend moving to Ecuador. He's saying (without trying to sound angry) that its unpredictable that shed leave, but its the right thing for her. He hopes she had a great time while she was still with him.

I think this is about all the unpredictable things that happen in life, and that we have to go with the flow no matter what happens.

I always felt that this song was about messing up and how a simple mistake or just a radical change in your life can change your life. but how it is all meant to be and it may not always make since to you but in the end it will all work out....So don't stress about the little things.... Just enjoy life.... Also enjoy your life while you can because when the mistake or whatever happens things will change.

"For what it's worth, it was worth all the while"

This song isn't about life or death. He is speaking to his girlfriend. This is a reflection on a relationship at the point where you are experiencing the feelings that come with the realization that this person, who has been such a big part of your life, will no longer be.

Good Riddance (Time of your Life) -- the contradicting feelings of a broken relationship. Even if you're angry and want this person out of your life, you can't erase people and memories of them will evoke longing and emotional pain.

"It's something unpredictable but in the end it's right...I hope you had the time of your life" -- The end of a relationship isn't something you plan on but a lot of times the couple will be better off without each other. Also, he hopes that her time with him will always remain close to her heart and that those memories are to be cherished now that they can no longer be re-lived.

Just stumbled across this. What I have to say applies to every song on this site:

Bruce Springsteen once said (about Born in the USA) that songs have a life of their own. They are like your children, you create them and then you put them out into the world. At that point, they become what they become.

So, if you want the song to be about Billie Jo's girlfriend, it can be.

If you want the song to be about Berkeley, it can be.

If you want the song to be inspiring (a la a graduation-type use), it can be.

Whatever Billie Jo meant when he wrote it is not what the song may mean today. It can change over time.

For me this song sends the picture that 2 people (anyone) were having a lot of fun, but they get in an accident and one dies, but the other lives. The one who passes away's feelings are the song, and the song gives me the basic message of, "Don't forget me. I had fun. You'll be fine in life. Going out and having the fun we had was worth it, even though I'm dying. No one expected this to happen, but it's my time to go. I hope you had fun too."

because it's not written to say 'i hope you had the time of your life, omgggg I love you good luck' its actually 'good riddance mofo'

    so yeah.

It can be lots of things,
Don't Get hyped up at someone cause you think they are wrong,

if you wanna interpret it as suicide.. GO AHEAD.
    no one is stopping you.
if you want to interpret is a a moving away GO AHEAD.
i mean jeez no one is wrong.
this song is a great song and lets not fight about it.

it is about people at gillman's who though Green day sold out after they became a commercial success when Dookie came out."Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go" meaning. It wasn't our fault that we became so big so don't get pissed off about it.
