He is basically talking about how the town basically devotes itself to both God and alcohol hence "church pew or bar stool." However he also states that he doesn't want to be stuck in the same rut that everyone else is, where they have to choose between "whiskey or a bible." He wonders why he hangs around this town and I think deep down, he knows he must leave if he ever wants to do anything with his life.
