John Denver: Fly Away Meaning
Song Released: 1975
Fly Away Lyrics
-
The song seems to be a commentary on depression associated with being disconnected from nature while living in an entirely artificial environment. With nowhere to go to find the wonderful things she longs for, perhaps to "fly away" is to do so out of the window of a high-rise apartment.
Lack of nature leads to depression which leads to suicide. -
Is she about to commit Suicide?
-
This song kind of feels like It was written from the perspective of a person in the beginning stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s.

It's about a woman who has given up on hoping for anything. She can only bare it by looking at her life through a gauze like filter and shutting out the depression.
-
My interpretation of John Denver's song Fly Away, is about an old woman who no longer sees anything familiar and has lived her life happily. She is widowed and lonely and is looking for familiar things such as love and children laughing and playing. But as her days are getting close to ending she is about ready to fly away to heaven like the hymn I'll Fly Away, where things are made new again, looking forward to spring/heaven.

This song is about a girl who has lived a rough life and has worked hard all of her days, and is finally taking advantage of the opportunity to break free, and live her own life where she can be happy, loved, and enriched.
