The song is about Darryl Hannah's accusation that her then-boyfriend Jackson Browne physically abused her. Mitchell denied the lyrics were about Browne but it was a transparent attempt to cover her ass legally. Browne acknowledged that the lyrics were about him and retorted that Joni hadn't been "well" for a long time and that the real reason she wrote the song was that she had "carried a torch" for him for twenty years.
