I am absolutely the wrong person to try to interpret any song. Because, although I was an English major who learned that as an important part of poetry reading and enjoying, I do not believe everything should be interpreted objectively. Probably one can't help it, but it isn't done on the top of the mind, probably more subconsciously, in a deeper, darker, less known part of the mind. And so it will have a different meaning to each one of us - because we bring our own needs, desires, dislikes, psychological problems, psychic longings, etc. to it.

In the case of this one, I have always had a secret, fantasy life, to take the place of the unpleasant realities I had to live with. So In MY Secret Life, is what I like to imagine are the realities, the people I'd like to be involved with, the life I'd like to have; at least In My Secret Life I can love and be loved with impunity, I can make mistakes, apologize, and be forgiven. These two sentences seem necessary for anything written by L. Cohen, but as for me, I can be happy In My Secret Life, in case I am not in my real life.
