They Stood Up for Love Lyrics
electric nerves communicate
with tiny explosions through our brains
who is this energy that never left or came?
give rise to passion the only glory
of this human story
I give my heart and...

I am not an atheist nor am I religious but I believe the chorus is referring to all messengers of god, they all stood up for love, "masters in every time, lord in every place" etc is with in reference to jesus, budha and all gods messengers who stood up for love. We can call "god" many names in many cultures and If there is a god, I think it's very possible that we would all share the same one without realising it. Each religion has its own set of morals / rules but at the end of the day, the same message is shared between all these religions and that is to love all no matter of the tiny differences. We may all be different but we are all one race (the human race)

I think that there is an acknowledgement in the essence of the song, of the respect for those who fought for the leagal acceptance of their inter-racial marriage, interestingly it was a case brought before the Supreme Court by an inter-racial couple with the actual last name of "Loving"..It could also be a nod to those gay and lesbian people who are working to have their relationships be also allowed legally under the umbrella of "marriage'..It's pretty clear the lyrics must be speaking about some sort of 'non-traditional love", and i certainly don't want to assign any or my agenda into the meanings..but "they stood up for love, despite the hate", has got to be referring to at least the "Loving" marriage case, i mentioned before..
