This song is about all the drag queens that loitered around him in the 60's while hanging out with Andy Warhol.

    "Holly" is Holly Woodlawn
    "Candy" is Candy Darling
    "Little Joe" is Joe Dallesandro
"Sugar Plum Fairy" is Joe Campbell
    "Jackie" is Jackie Curtis

This song is dated. It wouldn't be written now. The wild side is probably wilder now but is more crack whore in the gutter. I guess it had a bit of shock value by telling the world about aspirations of people coming to the NYC and how close to the edge and on the wild side they were. How times have changed. Lou Reid has also got older and wiser. He's a NYC man.

This song is lou reed simply talking about people he knew in nyc, the grenwich village area, in particular. It was, at least in the 60's and 70's, quite the bohemian part of the city.
